NetEnt’s The Phantom’s Curse Coming SoonHarry Coulter | 14 Dec 2017
After much waiting, fans of Swedish developer NetEnt will finally be able to get their hands on the firm’s newest mobile slot: The Phantom’s Curse. Based on the smash hit play and film created by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the game is set to be popular among all ages when it arrives early in 2018.
The Phantom’s Curse was actually due to hit mobile casinos halfway through 2017, but unfortunately, the release of the slot was delayed to make room for the popular Emoji Planet mobile slot game.
NetEnt promised that its Phantom of the Opera-themed slot would follow shortly, but a conflict of licensing rights with fellow gaming giant delayed the release of the new slot even further. It was in February 2017 that Microgaming acquired the rights to the Phantom of the Opera brand, releasing its own slot – The Phantom of the Opera – in November this year.
Licensing Clash Delays Game
The Swedish developer currently has the rights to the Universal Monsters Film, and happened to select the same character from this brand to base their new creation on. NetEnt has a deal with Universal Studios that allows the firm to create slots based on their most popular monsters, and this time, their choice was the Phantom, coinciding with Microgaming’s own plans.
In turn, Microgaming laid a complaint with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s company, the Really Useful Group, which in turn contacted Universal about the conflict in themes. Universal allegedly had a film based on the Phantom way before Webber created his own character, but it was the iconic music score that made the Phantom well known among fans, technically giving Microgaming first rights to the brand.
New Slot Arriving in January
Regardless, NetEnt will be releasing The Phantom’s Curse on 24 January, 2018 – although it will need to rival Microgaming’s own slot in order to truly capture players’ attention in the new year. Lucky Mobile slots has revealed so far that the slot will play out over 5 reels and 40 paylines, offering the Phantom, roses, mirrors and rings as higher paying symbols.
The winning potential then enters in the form of all symbols appearing stacked on the reels, along with three unique bonus games. The slot will offer a ‘pick me’ feature, a free spins game, and a re-spin bonus feature, with the free spins being unlimited until the Phantom breaks the chandelier’s ropes when he appears on the screen as an extra wild.
It will be interesting to see how NetEnt’s new Android slot game stacks up against Microgaming’s Phantom of the Opera slot, which has already proven to be a big hit. Ultimately, players will need to decide for themselves when The Phantom’s Curse appears at mobile casinos early next year!
